Creating a Lomo Effect with Photoshop

In this screencast I will be showing you how to create a “Lomo” effect with Photoshop CS4. I have included an action from the settings used in the screencast for you to download and try out on your own images.

I shot a wedding a couple of weekends ago and my good friend and fellow photographer Tony Barr kindly came along as 2nd shooter for the day. This shot of Tony was taken whilst we were checking out locations for the wedding couple the day before. So I got Tony to pose whilst I fired off a few shots with my new eZybox.

Off Camera Flash Info:

Nikon D700 with Pop Up Flash (Commander)
Nikon 50mm F1.4 – 1/5000th @ F4 ISO 400
Aperture Priority -2EV Exposure Compensation.
1 X SB900 – Camera Right Shot through the diffuser and a 60cm Ezybox with +1.7EV flash compensation.

The light is in a similar position to the shots I did of Jools, couple of weeks ago. But the main difference is that even though it was a cloudy grey day. There was sunlight coming from camera left so I used that as my fill light. However when you get the eZybox in nice and close it gives a beautiful wrap around lighting anyway.

Finally…

As promised in the screencast. I have created a lomo effect action based upon my own settings and these will give you a good starting point for your own images.

In return all that I ask in return is that you post an image with the effect applied onto our Flickr Group Pool, so that we can see the cool ways in which you are using the “Lomo Effect”. :) Enjoy! >

drat, each time I try to watch this I get to 8 min 13 and then my PC just freezes :-(

  2. Thats a pity Sandy you have another 1 minute or so to go. Try clearing your cache. :)

  3. Sandy says:

yeay, that worked. Will try it out sometime over the weekend. Wedding will keep me busy tomorrow….Swedish traditions and an Elvis impersonator too so should be fun!

  4. Good, have fun… Sandy! BTW one of your wedding shots was features on the home page of flickr the other day!

  8. hi stuart
just watched the screencast on lomo effect and i must say it was brilliant i can remember the skipper on one of the vessels i sailed on he had a lomo camera http://www.wired.com/rawfile/2009/06/gallery-lomo/
so i can remember the results he got from it, cracking effect, look forward to your next screencast

  9. Thanks Andrew. Glad you enjoyed the tutorial. Its a bit of twist on the other lomo techniques out there.

  10. Govind says:

    Loved it Mr. Stuart….
I have question… I use a Canon SX 100 IS digi camera, and the picture of whatever I take and when I try to retouch it, it doesn’t come as the tutorial shows… Is it because of the lens clarity that makes it different from Digi SLR’s?
I take all my shots in manual mode.

  11. Glad you liked the screencast. You cannot really compare the quality of a DSLR like the Nikon D700 with a point and shot, so yes there will be a quality difference.

  12. Govind says:

    Thought so……. :)

  13. Neutron says:

Best tutorial for Lomo Effect I’ve found. I got better results than with other methods. Can I get the “same” LOMO effect with a special filter/lenses combination on a DSLR? Is there any downloadable version available?

thank you man for posting this tutorial!

  14. Neutron says:

p.s. downloadable version of the video tutorial, I meant.

  15. Thanks Neutron, I am not sure you can achieved the same effect with a DSLR, maybe lomo should make DSLR :) – We are building an LPS+ section so that for $9 per month you can download and keep all the screencasts from the website. Thanks for the comment its good to get feedback glad you like it.

  16. Rob Brook says:

I used this tutorial for a recent competition at Lowepro UK monthly competition on Flickr and won so thanks a lot Stu.

  17. Really Well Done Rob! Your doing well with your competitions. Send me the image and I will post it in your comment, so people can see! Superb. What was your prize?

  18. Alan Turnbull says:

    Great tutorial Stu,

However, the thing I like best is the way that you label yourself as ‘bawbag’ in your diagrams…. good ole scottish humour. lol
