Retouching 35mm Film Scans with Photoshop – Part 1

I am currently bringing back to life old photos from when I used to shoot film. So this week I thought it would be cool to follow up on how I setup my graphics tablet and show you how I use on a 35mm film scan. If like me you have a bunch of old neg’s in need of scanning. Then this will give you a great workflow for retouching a Tiff image in Adobe Camera RAW and Photoshop.

The starting point is a yucky weak scan, but because the file was saved as a TIFF image. It means that I can get it into Bridge to open it up in Adobe Camera RAW. Which in turn let’s me use all these great non-destructive tools and settings. Now, working with a film negative is different to working with a digital negative. Unless you have a scanner with “ICE” software built in for removing all the dust and scratches.

You are going to want to do things differently and that begins with the crop tool because you need to remove the white border created by the negative holder and also crop our any information you do not want in the final shot. It will save you a bunch of time when it comes to the removal of “Boogies”. After that its pretty much business as usual with the basic panel and then onto the retouching tools. >

  1. Sorry for the delay in getting Monday’s screencast online. We are testing a new player and Greg needs a bit longer to fine tune things, so its back to the existing player until the kinks are ironed out! This one is a bit of a Monster! So get the popcorn out its 40 minutes in total. but it does show what you can do with crappy 35mm film scan and a bit of ACR and Photoshop Enjoy!

Just watched the first part of the video and it’s great. I’ve noticed on most of Stu’s videos that the techniques he gives can be applied to other tasks.

    Well done. Again

I would hole heartedly agree with you John.
Stu’s presentation’s come on in leaps and bounds
especially now as it seems he’s taken on a slower, more laid back way of
    instructing.
This particulate screen cast is a very good example of this, and I found
it a pleasure to watch and very easy to digest.
    Well done Stu.
    All the best.
    Mick.

  4. Yep! the large whisky :) before I record seems to do the trick! Cheers Stu
